Top university for international outlook in Australia and New Zealand

In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018, AUT is ranked 15th in the world for International Outlook (making us first in New Zealand and Australia), and among the world's top 500 universities. Times Higher Education ranks universities for international outlook according to their ability to attract international students and staff, as well as how well they engage and collaborate with overseas universities.

One of the world's top young universities

In 2017, Times Higher Education ranked AUT as one of the world’s top 150 young universities, based on the quality of teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income. AUT is also one of the worlds' top millennial universities (those founded in the 21st century) - ranked as number 1 in Australasia and 14 in the world.

Internationally ranked subjects at AUT are:

  • Clinical & Health - #101-125 band
  • Life Sciences - #301-400 band

Both subjects performed particularly well in terms of international co-authorship and their percentage of international staff and students. Research citation impact was also an area of strength for Clinical & Health.

QS World University Rankings

In the QS World University Rankings 2018, AUT is ranked as one of the top 450 universities in the world (in the 441-450 band). This puts AUT in the top 2% of universities worldwide.

AUT’s international outlook was highlighted, with AUT ranking #29 in the world for attracting international students and #64 for attracting international academic staff.

QS Top 50 Under 50

In the QS ranking of the top 50 world universities under 50 years old, AUT was ranked in the #61-70 band. We are the 10th youngest university acknowledged in this ranking.

QS Stars

AUT has been rated as a five-star university by world university rankings organisation QS. We also achieved a maximum five stars for Teaching, Employability, Internationalisation, Facilities and Inclusiveness. AUT’s focus on Social Responsibility was recognised with a four-star rating.

The QS stars system uses a range of indicators to evaluate and benchmark the broader student experience and contribution of universities.

QS Best Student Cities

Auckland was ranked 28th in the QS Best Student Cities rankings, due to a high score for quality of living, a large and diverse student community, and a high rating from graduate recruiters as a source of new talent.

A key component of the rankings methodology is a worldwide reputation survey completed by academic peers (85,000) and employers (42,000). Research citations are also assessed for most subjects.

In 2017, AUT climbed about 120 places to be ranked #606 in the world, and is now #6 in New Zealand. The university scored particularly well on measures of research citation impact, and international collaboration in publication.

Academic Ranking of World Universities

In 2017, AUT’s School of Sport and Recreation was the top-ranked sport science school in New Zealand and among the top 100 in the world. The ranking consultancy identified international collaboration and research output as particular areas of strength in sport science at AUT.
